10 Movies Perfect for Movie Night

Since I was a little girl, I've LOVED movies. One of my all time favorite things we did when I was growing up was Friday Night Movie Night at the house. Dad would order pizza for pick-up, and then we would head down to the local movie store, Hastings, to rent movies before picking up our pizza and heading home for the perfect night in. We always did a double feature, my sister got a pick and so did I. Dad kept it fair that way. Dessert was ice cream or popcorn depending on majority vote. I should probably note here... these are in no particular order and this isn't a top 10 favorites list... I love too many movies, I don't know where I would begin ranking them all. I'm also not promising that all of these movies have clean language so, viewer discretion with kiddos. And now, without further ado, ten movies that I think are always perfect for movie night.

1. Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Top Gun has always been on my favorites list and is the movie I answer as my top favorite when anyone happens to ask. It's a grand adventure, it's love, it's epic saddness what more could you want in a friday flick?! Pair it with Top Gun: Maverick and you've got yourself a party.

*You can see both these movies streaming on Paramount+

2. Good Will Hunting (1997)

I love Good Will Hunting because it's a perfect movie for when you need Robin Williams to give you life advice. And Matt Damon has one of my favorite lines in cinema, "You dropped 150 grand on a f***in' education you could have got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the public library!" He has a point...

*Available to stream on Amazon Prime

3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

If you want a comedy, this is the movie for you. Between the music, and Marvin the depressed robot (voiced by Warwick Davis), you won't have too many moments that you aren't laughing.

*Available to buy/rent on Google

4. Princess Diaries (2001) and Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement (2004)

These two are just classics that I keep coming back to. Between the wit in the first one and the romance in the second I just love Mia and I find myself wishing that I could visit Genovia, Land of Pears.

*Available to stream on Disney+

5. A Few Good Men (1992)

This is another Tom Cruise flick that I think I could call a favorite. Although the real star of the show, I think, is Jack Nicholson. This is an aggressive movie, that will have you stressing right along with the characters. Just waiting to hear Jack scream "You can't handle the truth!"

*Available for buy/rent on Google

6. Mighty Joe Young (1998)

Charlize Theron is perfect in this pick as she does everything she can to save Joe the giant gorilla from poachers. If you love Jane Goodall and everything animal rescue, this movie is for you.

*Mighty Joe Young is streaming on Disney+

7. The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)

Golf, the worlds most sophisticated sport. This is a true story of how Francis Ouimet an amateur golfer, played against his idol in the 1913 US Open. He was only 20 years old at the time. It is such a beautiful story and I love rewatching it again and again.

*You'll find The Greatest Game Ever Played streaming on Disney+

8. Point Break (1991)

As one of my sisters all time favorite movie night picks, I just couldn't leave this one off the list.. I mean, who doesn't want to watch Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze rob banks and surf into the sunset?! I know I do. Its basically a California western.

*Now streaming on HBOMax

9. First Daughter (2004)

Katie Holmes stars as Sam the presidents daughter who just wants a normal college experience, but with the secret service and the press it proves difficult keeping a low profile in the middle of an election year. But with Mia and James by her side, we think things will all turn out okay. This movie will have you wanting to slow dance to "The way you look tonight" by Frank Sinatra and eating chocolate cake at midnight.

*Currently streaming on Hulu

10. The Italian Job (2003)

Another thrilling adventure staring Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg and a gold heist. Trust me you won't want to miss the mini cooper car chase in this movie.

*Streaming on Paramount+

*All Streaming recommendations as of April 2023
